Home Made Care

A Comforting Blend of Memoir and Guide for the Weary
Caregiver

Forty years of caregiving — the hard lessons, the funny stories, the heartbreak, and the hope. Written by someone who’s been there.

By Rochelle Miller — 40 years a caregiver

About the Book

More Than Just a Story

Part memoir, part guidebook — this is the book I wish someone had handed me on my first day as a caregiver.

Real Stories

From Betty and the rainstorm to Bert who fired me — every chapter is a true story from my 40 years of caregiving. No textbook theories. Just real life.

Hard-Won Lessons

Each story comes with the lessons I learned — about communication, boundaries, self-care, and finding your voice. Lessons I earned the hard way so you don't have to.

You're Not Alone

Whether you're burned out, second-guessing yourself, or wondering if you're in the right field — this book says what we're all thinking but rarely say out loud.

Inside the Book

Every Chapter, a Lesson

Each chapter tells a true story — and each story carries a lesson that every caregiver needs to hear.

1

“A young woman with cerebral palsy, a dead wheelchair battery, and a mile-long push uphill in a rainstorm. The day I heard myself snap — and learned what it means to really listen.”

2

“From social work to nursing homes to finding my true fit in in-home caregiving. Forty years of kissing frogs before finding my prince.”

3

“A Vietnam vet, a quadriplegic, a former CEO who knew exactly how he wanted things done. He fired me after one week. What he taught me was worth a lifetime.”

4

“She was rude, demanding, and nobody wanted to care for her. I almost walked out. Instead, I found my voice — and learned that verbal abuse is still abuse.”

5

“Because sometimes you just need to laugh. The moments that kept me going — and reminded me why I love this work.”

6

“Walking into their home was like walking into Heaven. Frank was dying with dignity, and his wife of 65 years just needed someone to listen. What they taught me about life, laughter, and silence.”

…plus chapters on abuse, depression, burnout, and an inspirational closing that will stay with you.

It takes heart to do this work — compassion, empathy, and a real love for your person.

About the Author

Rochelle Miller

For over forty years, Rochelle Miller has walked alongside the elderly, the disabled, and the vulnerable — as a caregiver, an advocate, and a friend. From group homes and nursing facilities to the intimate setting of in-home care, she’s done it all.

She’s had her heart broken by the work. She’s had days where she almost walked out. She’s been fired, verbally abused, and pushed past her limits. And she kept showing up — because this work isn’t just what she does. It’s who she is.

Home Made Care is the book she wishes someone had given her on Day One. It’s honest, funny, sometimes raw — and always real.

A Book That Understands
